SAFETY FIRST!

Happy Holidays!  With Christmas decorating just around the corner (if you haven’t already), I put together a few tips/reminders when using electrical decorations.   Remember to always be SAFE and not be in a hurry!

You don't want to end up like the guy in the picture above!

A few tips for outside decorations:

  1. Keep an eye on the weather – if the roof is slippery – use extreme caution or wait until the weather conditions are safe.
  2. Use a ladder that will extend several feet past the edge of the roof.

  3. Check all extension cords and electrical decorations to ensure they are for labeled for outdoor use.

  4. Inspect all lights, extension cords, decorations for damage. If need be, replace items that are damaged.

  5. Fasten your outdoor lights securely to prevent wind damage but not so secure they damage the lights.

  6. Use GFCI protected outlets for outdoor electric lights/decorations.

  7. Check ladders before using to ensure they are safe and not damaged.

  8. Keep your cell phone on you and better yet, ensure someone else is home when you are putting up the exterior lights/decorations.

A few tips for inside lights/decorations:

  1. Determine how many outlets are needed and location.

  2. Check lights/decorations for damage and to ensure they are in working condition prior to putting up.

  3. Always unplug electrical decorations before replacing bulbs or fuses.

  4. Turn off all indoor/outdoor decorations before leaving the house and before bed.

What other tips do you use when decorating your home?  Please feel free to share suggestions that you feel may be helpful for others.
